bi.ndiyaa tarase (Phir Wahi Raat)

A great melodious nugget enhanced with double-tracking for a movie that wasn't as bad as most Bollywood products and deserved more than dismal box office failure and historic oblivion. Also features haunting (appropriately) turns on the ivories and string flourishes.

diiwaaro.n kaa ja.ngal (Deewar)

Here's another Pancham composition that never made it past the vinyl onto the silver screen. Thankfully, tape and CD releases of the soundtrack retain the song. Wonder if they ever picturised this? Or was this meant to be the title song (the theme that exists instead is a good one, in any case, and replicated in numerous films that
followed).

Pancham probably loved the tune (not as much as the SAAGAR jalpari motif, which he pursued as late as 1993 in AAJA MERI JAAN) enough to reuse it in the poor variation on the KHATTA MEETHA theme, HAMAARE TUMHAARE {ISB song number 68}. The only trace of the song in DEEWAR is a string section playing the melody when Vijay (Amitabh) stares out of Daavar's (Iftekhar) window and the screen splits with a closeup of
Vijay on the right and a faded shot of Nirupa Roy and the little Vijay and Ravi walking on the "cruel streets of Bombay".

cheers

tumase milake zi.ndagii ko yuu.N lagaa (Chor Police)

A pleasant melody that made its way into Amjad Khan's directorial debut, which unfortunately bit the box office dust, condemning this song to oblivion. The song got a second life when it surfaced on a recent HMV compilation of R D Burman rarities that took its title from this song ...

wo jinakii na_ii hai ye duniyaa (Dhan Daulat)

What a song. It's a journey in itself. And yet, though nothing new, it hardly got any attention and lies well down the line in the not-so-popular songs list, happily.

Starts with a brief but fascinating prelude and Asha takes over like an angel. And the off-beat (literally) rhythm starts to bring it to a magical level. And yeah, it's just begun.

The stanza starts with the same notes of mukha.Daa but in an upper chord (techies! help me here) and the accompanying rhythm continues making the listener spellbound. And just when the song feels almost complete, Kishore punches in and the mood of the song changes with his style of the rendition as Majrooh changes the tone as well.

And in all this, if you think that you did not heard a word called "melody", stop right there. It's Pancham we are talking about. He seldom, if ever, missed that even while he was inordinately complex with the beats and rhythms and orchestra and other such stuff.
